I get a lot of questions about the exact software I use so hopefully this page will quiet those emails. This page will be updated quite a bit as I obtain more and more software along the years. Clicking on the respective application’s icon will take you to the developers page.
CSSEDIT is my swiss army knife when it comes to website maneuvering. I say maneuvering because it seems like there is always something I need to move over a few pixels or there is some element that is buried in the CSS. The X-Ray is great for finding elements buried in the site. The price may have gone up for this application but it is still worth the money.
CSSEDIT costs $39 and is published my MacRabbit.
When it comes to screencasting on the Mac Screenflow by Varasoft quickly rose to my #1 favorite Leopard applications. I’m not going to name names but the rest of the screencasting applications for Macs were left in the dust with the release of Screenflow. This application allows you to post video edit your screencast much like iMovie with all the necessities to make sure your viewers see your message clearly the first time without having to rewind.
Screenflow costs $99 and is published by Varasoft.
Cruz is one of those applications that makes you rethink Safari or even Webkit’s UI. Cruz breaks away from the pack is the ability to choose your own UI such as HUD and open multiple browser panes. I enjoy checking my Twitter feed periodically through the day and having Hahlo fly in on the right of my browser within the current page I’m on saves quite a bit of time. I’m compulsive when it comes to checking my sites and Cruz gives me the fix.
Cruz is a free download.
Adium, ah Adium. It is the instant message application for Macs. I wouldn’t know what I would do without it. The ability to completely modify the UI as well as install extras without the hassle of restarting or even clicking through install dialogues is pure genius. With such a great user base and number of developers there is really no need to use another instant message client for text chats. There are some short comings such as audio and video so keep ichat on the ready incase you want to use that mic and isight.
Adium is a free download however donations are accepted.
Mention Quicksilver and most Mac users will know exactly what you’re talking about. It is the one application that is boasted about the most by the community to newcomers. I wont go into too much detail other than Quicksilver is an application launcher for the most part but can do just about anything.
Quicksilver is a free download.
Mounting a network drive as a local drive in Finder is my favorite thing to do. I can’t tell you how many times I have tried to Quicklook a file while in an FTP program only to have it bark back at me. I now use ExpanDrive to mount my file server while at home or at school. What I like about ExpanDrive is the lack of those annoying .ds_store files. As a network admin I can’t tell you how embarrassing that is when you leave that garbage all over someone else’s network drive.
ExpanDrive costs $29 and is published by Magnetk.
I get my TV fix thanks to Elgato’s EyeTV software. Turning my Mac into a Tivo of sorts allows me to record my favorite shows such as The Office. I wouldn’t know what to do without this program since there isn’t a TV in my room. Getting over the air HDTV is great and 1080i looks spectacular. Instead of buying a huge TV invest in EyeTV and a bigger monitor, you wont be sorry.
EyeTV costs $79.99 and requires a compatible TV tuner.
Grabbing that latest Linux build for my EeePc requires some torrenting and for that I love Transmission. Simply download the .torrent file to my default folder and Transmission rumbles to life. There are many features inside this application that it could be a paid app if it wanted to. If you torrent check out Transmission.
Transmission is a free download however donations are accepted.
If you are a developer of anything chances are there is an IRC channel for your needs. Colloquy brings all your favorite UI features to IRC. Growl support as well as custom scripts are just a few features Colloquy brings to the table. I use this application just about every day and wouldn’t even think about switching to something different. I really like Colloquy’s icon as well, it fits the application perfectly.
Colloquy is a free download however donations are accepted.
Burning a CD with style is what I call it. Disco is one of those applications you have to see to believe. While you burn your favorite mix you are left to play with the actual smoke coming from this application. This is one of those eye candy applications that will make your peers jealous. Packing everything you could want in a burner into this custom UI with a price tag that is very affordable makes this an easy buy application. You get a few free burns in the trial period so check out the smoke.
